SACRAMENTO -- Almost 12,000 citations were handed out by law enforcement in the Sacramento region during a national campaign to crackdown on drivers using cell phones while traveling in their cars.
The "Phone In One Hand. Ticket In the Other." campaign began in the Sacramento Region toward the end of November. There were three waves of enforcement with the last ending June 30th. Chris Cochran with the Office of Traffic Safety says multiple agencies took part.
The California Highway Patrol and police departments from across the state took part in the campaign, Cochran said.
The campaign was highly publicized in commercials as well as on road signs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be studying the results of the campaign to see what effect it had on the Sacramento region.
