Charges Against Leland Yee 'Tearing into Heart' of Asian Community

Experts says Asian Americans around the state are dealing with major issues because of the indictment of state Senator Leland Yee.

Bill Whalen is a Hoover Institution fellow in the Bay Area, and he believes the corruption and firearms trafficking charges against Leland Yee are tearing into the heart of the Asian community.

"First of all, it's disheartening on one level because Leland Yee was the first Chinese American state senator in California state history. He's your Jackie Robinson for Chinese Americans in California, and it turns out that he's certainly a fallen idol," Whalen said.

Whalen also says prior to Yee's indictment, there was a big battle in Sacramento over a proposed state constitutional amendment which would change affirmative action policies pertaining to higher education.

That amendment would open the door for universities to establish racial quotas.
