A computer glitch in California is making the employment picture unclear. Initial filings for unemployment insurance jumped up last week by 66,000. The 374,000 claims is the most the Labor Department has seen since March. Many of those increases were in California, where as you know the Employment Develop Department hadtrouble converting to a new computer system.
The numbers also don't reflect furloughed government employees, but do include a surge of non-government workers laid off because of the government shutdown.
