Davis Plans to Ban Businesses from Using Plastic Bags

DAVIS, Calif. -- Paper, or plastic? In another year, that may not even be a question in Davis. The City Council has voted to draft an ordinance that would ban single-use plastic bags by July of 2014 and impose a 10 cent charge for re-usable ones offered in stores.

The ban would be imposed on hundreds of retail outlets across the city in an effort to cut down on waste and clean-up expenses.

While the Chamber of Commerce opposed the idea, some businesses have been going without plastic voluntarily for years.

More than 80 cities and counties across the state have adopted some type of regulation of plastic bags.
