Sacramento is one step closer to seeing professional soccer played at Cal Expo next spring.

Today the Cal Expo Board agreed to continue with plans for a temporary 8,000 seat stadium on the site of the California State Fair.

That stadium is expected to be ready for play next spring, just in time for the start of the Sacramento Republic FC soccer club's first season.

The $3 million cost of the stadium will be covered by Cal Expo's food and beverage contractor, Ovations.

"We're excited about the future. And we believe soccer is the future of Sacramento," Owner and vice-president Nick Nicora said.

Ovations currently operates the Major League Soccer stadium in Philadelphia, Penn. The Cal Expo board is likely to give final approval for construction of the stadium at the December meeting.
