Second Winner of $648 Million Lottery Jackpot Comes Forward

The California winner of the second largest Mega Millions jackpot has finally come forward to claim his prize.

Steve Tran is a delivery driver who decided to pick up tickets while he made his rounds.

"He was with his family in San Jose at the shopping center where Jennifer's Gift Shop is located and that's where the winning ticket was purchased," Melissa Villarin with the California Lottery said.

Villarin says that Tran bought some Quick Picks and then placed them with other tickets he had on his dresser and didn't think to check them until 3 a.m. Monday.

"He woke up and remembered that he had went to San Jose, and he decided that he needed to check the ticket. And it turned out he was the big winner," she said.

Tran did not want to disclose where he is from, but we do know he turned the ticket into the Sacramento office. He gets half of the $648 million Mega Millions jackpot from December 18.

The other winner, Ira Curry, is from Georgia and came forward to claim her prize Dec. 18. Lottery officials there say she opted to take the lump sum payment of about $120 million after taxes.

The jackpot is the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. It started its ascent Oct. 4.
