Tahoe May Have Fewer Trees Soon

Tahoe may soon have fewer trees.

The U.S. Forest Service is planning to launch a major forest-thinning project on Lake Tahoe's north shore that's designed to reduce wildfire risk.

Plans call for the reduction of trees and brush on 3,200 acres of Forest Service lands near the communities of Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Lake Forest and Tahoe City.

Work on 310 acres above Kings Beach could begin as early as next week. The entire project could take seven to ten years to complete.

In 2012, the Forest Service began a similar program to remove fuels from a 10,000 acre area of Tahoe’s south shore.
